“It is not the possessions but the desires of mankind which require to be equalized.”
– Aristotle, 384 BC
What Aristotle got right millennia ago, leaders across the board—claiming to represent the voices of marginalized sections of society—haven’t gotten right to this day. The most basic form of inequality is the inequality in wealth. Major upheavals in the history of mankind have been about the redistribution of wealth. The French Revolution and Marxist communism have romanticized the idea of equal distribution of wealth.
Exorbitantly tax the rich, Redistribute it among the poor. Nationalization of big industries, Land redistribution etc. have been some of the methodologies adopted in the endeavor to equalize wealth. Has it had a meaningful impact? Has the rich-poor divide narrowed? How effective are these policies in uplifting the marginalized sections of society?
The entire universe works on the flow of energy, with a constant flow or motion. If everything were to come to a standstill, I guess everything would just freeze and cease to exist. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution shows that every aspect of nature hinges on competitive spirit and survival of the fittest.
Instead of disincentivizing wealth creation, the focus should be on the collective elevation of people’s aspirations. Quality education, with an emphasis on human values, and the drive to innovate are the only ways forward in the meaningful upliftment of society as a whole.
Spreading hate and stirring up animosity between sections of society accrue only short-term political gains. Humanity needs to survive beyond the lifetimes of its so-called leaders. Each generation must strive to hand over the burning torch to the coming generations, creating a more vibrant community that’s in sync with the universe.
